Orca Bay Foods’ Cioppino with Alaskan Cod has captured two prestigious Alaska Symphony of Seafood honors, including Chicago People’s Choice award and first place in the Food Service category.

Since 1993, the Alaska Symphony of Seafood has celebrated creative and innovative ideas in the seafood industry, bringing together a host of new products before a panel of judges and the public. It was created by the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation to promote new product development for seafood harvested in Alaskan waters by encouraging participation and sponsorship from a wide variety of companies and organizations that together are building the future of the Alaska fishing industry.

To craft the eclectic Cioppino with Alaskan Cod stew, Orca Bay brings together a veritable United Nations of choice seafood — select cod from Alaska, scallops from China, and shrimp from Southeast Asia.

We are very excited to have won twice with our Cioppino,” said Mark Tupper, sales manager for Orca Bay Foods. “The product is all natural, low in fat and tastes delicious — exactly what consumers are looking for in a healthy-eating option.”

Judges in the Food Service category included Stefan Czapala, owner of Chef by Design; John Draz, culinary instructor for Kendall College; Lisa Duchene, senior editor for Seafood Business; Bill Hogarth, Director of NOAA Fisheries; Jeff Muldrow, chef and owner of Va Pensiero Restaurant; and William Rice, food writer for the Chicago Tribune.

The Chicago’s People’s Choice award was voted on by those in attendance at the Jan. 29 Symphony of Seafood’s Chicago Gala Soiree. The Food Service honor was decided at the same show, but not announced until Feb. 7.

Orca Bay Foods will display its winning Cioppino with Alaskan Cod at the International Boston Seafood Show March 14-16, 2004.

Orca Bay Foods has been in business since 1985 and is one of America’s largest producers of portion-controlled, ready to cook, frozen seafood items. Its state of the art processing facility in Seattle handles seafood from around the world, Alaska to the South Pacific.
