The seafood industry is a world-wide family of resources and retailers, marketers and marketplaces. Though the edge for marketshare can be heavy like competitive siblings, the one thing that squares us off also brings us together. Our love of the ocean and the bountiful harvests of seafood it continually endows us with. Orca Bay Seafoods would like to bring you a series each month within our blog highlighting some of our seafood industry partners we feel are worthy of attention.
The first in this series is the seafood industry’s answer to hunger, SeaShare. Seashare is a national nonprofit hunger-relief organization, founded in 1994, that links seafood companies and their suppliers to food banks across the country, providing desperately needed, high quality, nutritious seafood to feed the hungry. This effective model has allowed the seafood industry, through SeaShare to become one of the largest private sources of protein for hunger relief in the United States. Seashare’s mission statement’s state the following objectives: Improved access to high quality food and improved health and nutrition for low income people in the United States; reduction of discard waste of fish in state and federal fisheries; improved utilization of seafood resources; and to end hunger in the United States.
Orca Bay Seafoods is proud to support Seashare not only with our resources, but also share in it’s objectives and values. Last year Orca Bay Seafoods donated over 14,000 pounds to Seashare, adding to the 23 million pounds of seafood provided to hungry men, women and children in America to date.
